Proven Tips and Things to do.

Technologies like Artificial intelligence, Data Science, the Internet of Things, Blockchain, and much more are taking the world by storm. What better year to get into tech than 2024? According to Spiceworks, many companies around the world are heavily investing in tech, as 66% of companies are gearing up to double up on their IT budgets for 2024 vs. only 4% planning to decrease tech spending.

As a computer science BTech holder, a certified IT technician, and someone who has experience in various fields such as software development, AI, Data Science, Networking, and Technical writing, you can be sure I have some great tips for you.

As much as I encourage you to get into tech you should know that tech is just one of the many prestigious careers out there. Some of these careers are Law, Accountancy, Economics, Civil Engineering, Architecture design and so much more. I would not say tech is better than any of this. I would just say it is really on fire right now.

First off, you should make sure that you are getting into tech for the right reasons. Yes, you can make good money from Tech, but it really isn’t about the cash. It should be about passion and problem-solving.

Talking about passion. You should go for a tech field that excites you. Do you want to be hands on (Networking)? Do you want to build digital solutions (software engineering)? Do you have a knack for design (UI/UX)? Do you want to share your ideas with words (technical writing)? Or do you have leadership skills and love managing people (project management)? Believe me there is something for everyone.

From what I discussed above Tech is not all about coding and software engineering, there are a ton of other fields.

Now how do you break into tech the right way? I know there are a lot of books and videos on this subject, however, I am sharing my unique perspective as someone who has helped various people break into tech, and has vast experience. Here are some proven tips to break into tech

  1. Knowing what drives you

Yes, you need to discover what drives you to get into tech, is it the money or do you just love a particular field in tech? I remember myself, I have always had a fascination with robots even as a child. So I knew tech was my way.

2. Pick a field and do extensive research

After discovering what drives you, its time to pick a field. For example if you pick UI/UX design, make sure you read books on the UI/UX career. Do extensive research on the scope of UI/UX and the need for UI/UX designs. Check out the career progressions in UI/UX. Believe me, you should always look out for growth in whatever you fields you pick.

3. Tutorials, Bootcamps and structured learning

The world of learning is becoming digital by the day. Now I know that many newbies use YouTube as a start to their tech journey. However, it is common knowledge that many YouTube playlists cannot give you structured learning. I would recommend that you start with structured learning on platforms like Coursera, Udacity, and Udemy.

You should start with a beginner’s course on a learning platform. Then you can move to a more specialized course. You should always start with a beginner’s course.

4 Reevaluate Your decision

After following the three steps above, then you should know if your chosen path truly excites you. If not you can always repeat the the first three points with another field.

5 A portfolio and a fantastic CV

A CV is a very important part of getting into tech. There is no way you can get a tech job without an outstanding CV. Also set up your portfolio on sites like LinkedIn where recruiters can meet you.

6 Get a mentor and Network

You should get a mentor who will help you through your journey. A mentor is someone who will lead and teach you on your tech journey. Remember the best way to learn is from experience.

Also networking is very important. Try to attend as many tech events and hackathons, where you can meet people with similar interests as you.

7 Volunteering or Internship

The next step is to volunteer and intern with your chosen group. Make sure you apply to companies that align with your interests. Also volunteering opens up a whole new world that helps you easily get into the industry. And guess what you can get retained after volunteering or interning

8. Your dream job

Now it’s time to hit those applications to those companies. Then make sure you are applying for jobs on job sites like LinkedIn, Indeed, and Upwork.

9. Never give up

Keep it going and don’t ever give up on your applications. You need to apply to many jobs as much as possible.

Conclusion

You are now set to become a newbie in tech having followed these tips. I assure you it could look like a long journey, but it only takes a step. Take that step and there will be no limit to your success.
